José Echegaray
Birth: Apr. 19, 1832
Death: Sep. 14, 1916

Dramatist, Statesman, Author. Echegaray was a co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1904, along with the poet Frédéric Mistral. After studying in Madrid, Echegaray won fame as a renowned mathematician. In 1868, Echegaray was named Minister of Education and of Finance after the triumph of the popular movement against the monarchy. He then began his literary career, becoming a leading dramatist of the second half of the nineteenth century. His most acclaimed works include "El Gran Galeoto," "La Hija Natural," "El Libro Talonario," "En El Puńo de la Espada" and "El Hijo de Don Juan." He was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy in 1894. (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
