|Birth: ||Feb. 9, 1811|
|Death: ||Jul. 27, 1897|
After his wife, Elizabeth Cooper died in Huntsville, Schuyler Co., Illinois, James Baxter married Sara, widow of Cornelius Baxter of Ohio. Although James Baxter's stone has a date of death being July 27th, his obituary indicates that he died on Wednesday July 21st and was buried on the 23rd. Death certificate needs to be consulted. The obituary is apparently incorrect regarding his children. Although three of his sons had died before their father, one son, Dr. William Baxter was still living in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
In the demise of this aged resident last Wednesday at Atwood, this county has lost one of its aged, oak-rooted citizens. A man of firm connections and and genial withal. In the forties he lived in this town, where his family of three daughters and three sons were born. The three sons preceded him to the unknown, but he, like "A tree of deepest root, was found least willing still to quit the ground." Was 84 years old. Was sick only a week. Leaves a widow, nee Yant, and two daughters, survivors. His daughter Rachel Crain, of Illinois, was at his funeral. Interment at Baxter's Ridge, Friday, July 23, 1897.
