In her long career, she actually did little work in films, preferring to perform on the stage or on television. She debuted on Broadway in the 1935 and was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Tony Award for her performance in "The Crucible" (1953). She made her big screen debut in "Patterns" (1956) following by "The Nun's Story" (1959). In 1976, she won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance as Louise Schumacher in the film "Network". Her film credits included "Bloodline" (1979), "The Formula" (1980) and "Endless Love" (1981). Among her many television credits are "Studio One", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Route 66", "Hallmark Hall of Fame", "Wonder Woman", "King's Crossing" and "St. Elsewhere".
