US Congressman. From 1806 to 1816, he was postmaster of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, a member of the State House of Representatives, 1812 to 1820, and a member of the State Senate, 1823 to 1826. In 1831, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-second Congress, serving until 1833. After his term, he was elected a member of the State House of Representatives serving from 1835 to 1840. US Congressman William Lewis Dewart was his son.
