John was born in Newhills, Aberdeenshire, the son of John Reid of Udny, Aberdeenshire and Jane Cummings Reid of Corgarff, near Strathdon, Aberdeenshire. His middle name was a variation of his mother's maiden name. He had three sisters, including Isabel Reid Petrie.
John married Catherine B. Davidson on July 7, 1876 at 53 Barron Street, Old Machar (Woodside), Aberdeenshire.
They migrated to the United States through Canada in 1883. The family spent many years in Dell Rapids, Minnehaha Co., South Dakota, where John was naturalized as a US citizen on Sep. 24, 1884.
He became the father of John Leslie in 1877, Williamina Birnie in 1878, Gordon Davidson in 1880, William D. in 1884, Charles D. in 1887, Mabel D. in 1888, K. Grace in 1892, Robert D. in 1895, and two other children who died before they could be named.
John was a stone dresser and a member of the Masons. He has some pieces in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he cut the stones for some dedication slabs.
The family settled in Lambertville in 1895, and John lived there for the rest of his life.
He was very family oriented, and he always took good care of his sister Isabel. When her husband failed to arrive in America as planned, he travelled back to Scotland twice in search of him. John's brother-in-law was never found.
His cause of death was phthisis pulmonalis, which is known today as tuberculosis.
