Physicist who first demonstrated his invention, the cyclotron (atom smasher), in 1930; it accelerated protons. The cyclotron later produced radioisotopes for medical use. He was at university of California from 1928-58 and in 1936 became director of its Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, later named for him. He won a Nobel Prize for Physics in 1939. During World War II, he and others developed plutonium sources for the atomic bomb.
