Union Civil War Soldier, Prisoner of War. After the Civil War began he volunteered to serve in the Union Army and enlisted on September 20, 1862 at the age of 15. He was mustered into service as a Private in Company A of the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He had been a sophomore at Hughes High School when he left to join. It was exactly one year from his enlistment at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863, Wulsin was captured by the Confederates. He was held as a prisoner of war and died at Andersonville Prison in Georgia from debilities when he was 17 years old. He is buried in Grave Number 6397. A cenotaph in his memory was inscripted onto his family's monument at Spring Grove Cemetery. Two of his brothers also served in the Civil War. Drausin Wulsin served with the 137th Ohio National Guard Infantry. Lucien Wulsin served with Eugene with the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry.
