British Royalty. Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. Born Arthur William Patrick Albert, he was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. From and early age, Arthur showed interest in the Army. He entered the Royal Military Academy in 1866, and received his commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Engineers a year later. He later transferred to the Regiment of Artillery, then to the Rifle Brigade. He served in South Africa, Canada, Ireland, and Egypt. Arthur married Princess Louise of Prussia on March 13, 1879 at St. George's Chapel. The couple had three children. He was promoted to general in 1893, and went on to important positions such as Commander-in-Chief of Ireland, Inspector-General of the Forces, and from 1911-1916, Governor-General of Canada. He and his wife were both very active in the war effort during WWI, and he continued to be active in WWII. The duchess died in 1917, and Arthur retired from public life in 1928, living at his estate, Bagshot Park. He died there at the age of 91. (bio by: VampireRed)
