Enlisted 12 Aug 1862 at Saltillo MS; Signed his parole at Vicksburg 9 July 1863; Appears on Pay Roll dated 31 Oct 1863 at Montgomery AL; Furloughed for 40 days on 15 Dec 1863 by Medical Examining Board at Dalton GA: WIA at "Chickamauga" (more likely nearby Chattanooga - Missionary Ridge/Lookout Mountain): gunshot wound of left arm with sloughing and not improving (sloughing: dead skin falling off due to gangrene). Home: Chambers County (Lafayette AL); Died in the General Hospital No. 10 at Salisbury NC of pneumonia on 27 March 1865; Burial recorded as "J.A. Allen" buried in Old Lutheran Cemetery Rowan County NC.
