Major John S. Gavitt was a residence of Evansville, Indiana. He was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Indiana in 1860.
When the Civil War broke out he enlisted as a Major in the 1st Indiana Cavalry. On 8/20/1861 he was commissioned into Field & Staff. On 10/21/1861 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
He was Killed on 10/21/1861 at Frederickstown, Missouri, making him the first officer from the state of Indiana to die during the Civil War. Years later the Indiana Department of the Grand Army of the Republic created a medal in rememberence of Lieutenant Colonel Gavitt.
