Laquita was the daughter of John J. Dowdell Jr and Mary Chambers Dowdell. She was educated in the Muscogee County School System and was a Class of 1984 graduate of Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia. She attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree. She attended Troy State University in Troy, Alabama and earned her Master Degree and Family Nurse Practioner Degree. She was a member of the Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia where she was a former member of the Choir and served as Chairperson for the annual Christmas Seminar, member of the Sign Language Committee and Christian Education Department.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Tommy Sanders and Mary Sanders and her paternal grandparents, John H. Dowdell Sr and Mattie Dowdell.
