He made is stage debut at age 12. He played his roles from Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams with great ease. In 1955 he played his first movie role in "Das heiße Herz." He was awarded the Bundesfilmpreis in silver (German movie award) for his role in "The Buddenbrooks" in 1959 and in 1961 in gold for 'Der letzte Zeuge' (The Last Witness). In 1961 he played James Cagney's assistant Schlemmer in Billy Wilders "One, Two, Three." He died during rehearsals for "Meuterei auf der Caine."
