Actor. A performer of stage, films and television, he was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and raised in Washington D.C. He developed an interest in acting at an early age and would later pursue his goals upon graduating from the University of North Carolina, finding work appearing in area theaters. In 1955, Grizzard made his Broadway debut in "The Desperate Hours" co-starring Paul Newman and Karl Malden. During the next ten years, he had memorable performances in the productions, "The Happiest Millionaire", "The Disenchanted" and "Big Fish, Little Fish". In 1964, Grizzard gained noteworthy acclaim creating the role of 'Nick' in the Edward Albee play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?". In 1996, he won a Tony Award for "A Delicate Balance". Grizzard also had a memorable performance in the 1962 film "Advise and Consent". His other film credits include, "Warning Shot" (1967), "Happy Birthday, Wanda June (1971) and "Bachelor Party" (1984). During the course of his career, he had numerous guest television appearances on such shows as "The Twilight Zone", "The Golden Girls" and "Law and Order". He died from lung cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
