Lord Robert Runcie served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1980 to 1991 and presided over the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. He was also notable for the Terry Waite hostage crisis in Beirut, campaining for his release. He also welcomed the visit to England of the Pope in 1982, the first visit since Britain's split with Rome in the 16th century. He also paved the way of accepting female priests into the church as well as criticising the policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. (bio by: Kieran Smith)
