Physician, Surgeon, Union Civil War Surgeon, Medical Professor. Born in Walpole, Massachusetts, he attended the Academies at Wrentham and Wilbraham near Springfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Medical Department at Harvard College in 1854 and began to practice in Dedham, Massachusetts. He moved to Urbana, Ohio in 1857. When the Civil War began, he was appointed on September 4, 1861 as a Surgeon for the Union Volunteer Army and served with the Army of the Tennessee. He was assigned to the staff of General William T. Sherman as Medical Director and later as an assistant director under General U.S. Grant. Before he resigned in 1863 due to physical disabilities, he organized and operated the Gayosa Military Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He returned to Ohio and resumed his medical profession in Cincinnati, Ohio. He became an anatomy professor at Pulte Medical College from 1872 to 1891. He is also a member of the American Institute of Homeopathy and the Ohio State Medical Society. During President Benjamin Harrison's administration, he served as a member of the pension board of Hamilton County. He died in Avondale near Cincinnati, Ohio in 1907 when he was 79 years old.
