Mrs. Nelson was born on July 28,1923, in Childress to Oliver and Ruby Pringle.
She grew up in Hollis, Okla., and graduated from LaCasa High School in 1941. After high school, she married Charles Noble Nelson, also from Hollis, at which time he began serving in the Navy, during World War II. Soon they had their first child, Ronald. She also gave birth to three girls during the mid 40s, none of whom survived. In 1951, son Scott was born and the family relocated to Amarillo in 1952. In 1955, her third son, Joe was born. When husband Noble passed in 1964, Mrs. Nelson continued as an active person in Amarillo's business community as the owner of Belmar Cleaners until 1971 then shifting into the hotel/motel business where she served on the board and as President of The Panhandle Hotel Motel Association for almost 30 years. During this time, she was general manager of Howard Johnson West, The Quality Inn and served in sales for many motels, not the least of which was The Big Texan Motel & Restaurant, which looms largest in her legend. From the age of 73 until 84, she was known as "The Opry Mom" by more than 500 singers, young and old alike. Every Tuesday night, she arranged the singers and dancers to put on a show at The Big Texan, making people from all over the world happy they stopped in Amarillo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver and Ruby Pringle; three brothers and a sister; her husband, Noble; and a son, Ronald.
Survivors include her sons, Scott Nelson and wife Beverly, and Joe Nelson and wife Charli; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
