Ray Scobee,69,of Green Castle,died at 5:30 this morning (Dec. 1, 1978) in a Kirksville Hospital where he had been a patient since 7:30 Thursday evening.He had been in failing health,however death was unexpected.
The son of James Nicholas and Emma Rosetta Lewis Scobee, he was born Jan 17,1909 near Sidney.On May 13,1962,at Green Castle,he married Mary Vera Freshwater Saulsbury, who survives.Also surviving are three brothers,Harold E. Scobee of 2006 E. McPherson,Howard Scobee of Kansas City North and Robert Scobee of Smithville;one sister,Alice Overall,of Miami,Fla.;five step-children,Donald Lee Saulsbury of Casper,Wyo.,Larry Saulsbury,of Gillette, Wyo.,Mrs. John (Jerol Dean) Eichelburger of Gillette, Wyo.,Mrs. Earl (Judy) Barnes of Moorcraft,Wyo.,and Ronald Ray Saulsbury of Bryan,Tex., and 12 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Dade Scobee,Merle ("Red") Scobee,Alta Scobee and two in infancy.
Mr. Scobee was reared in the Green Castle community. Later he resided in Des Moines,Iowa and Kansas City before returning to Green Castle 25 years ago.
He was a professional musician and performed on radio in Iowa,Missouri and South Dakota.He also appeared in three movies which were filmed in California.
During World War II,Mr. Scobee served with the United States Army.
He was a member of the King-Walker-Custer American Legion Post 365 of Green City.He was also a member of the Hamilton Street Baptist Church,where funeral services will be held Monday afternoon (Dec. 4, 1978) at two o'clock.The Rev. Kenneth Kelley,pastor of the church, will conduct the services.Burial will be in the Green Castle Cemetery with military rites at the graveside.
The body is at the Glenn E. Kent and Son Funeral Home in Green City where it will remain until noon Monday,when it will be taken to the church.
