He served as the judge of Jasper County, Missouri, 1890 to 1896 and was a member of the State House of Representatives in 1897. In 1911, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress, serving until 1913. A unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he was again appointed judge of Jasper County in 1919 and served until his death.
