Olympic Athlete. He is regarded by many as being the greatest discus thrower in sports competition, winning gold medals at the 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics while setting numerous records in that event. Prior to Olympic competion, Oerter was a standout track and field athlete at the University of Kansas. He was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1974 and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1983. He became an accomplished painter later in life. (bio by: C.S.)
