Funeral services for J. C. MCGINNIS, veteran of the Civil War, who died yesterday at the Confederate home, were held this morning. Rev. GEORGE .W LEWIS, supt. of the Home, officiated at the services held at the Home. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery arranged by Bettes Funeral Home. He was born in Missouri in 1843. His death was followed a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, who resides at the Home, and two children.
He was born in Dallas County, MO and died in Ardmore, Carter County, OK. He was the son of William W. McGinnis, Jr., and Margaret Ann Wilson McGinnis. He married Charlotte Zarelda Keithley on May 14, 1865 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX. They were the parents of Sydney William, Dudley John, Dora A., Madison Matthew, Missouri Eva, Malcolm Al Colonel Caswell, Edna Lottie, Ida Maud, John Alvin, Cora Florence and Clara Mae.
John moved from MO to TX when he was 17. After the Civil War began and his father became a Militia Captain, John joined the "Invincibles" Cavalry Unit in the 20th Brigade, at Johnson's Station (now Arlington), TX. He remained active in the 9th TX Cavalry until discharge on February 20, 1865 in Benton, MS. He was wounded at least twice. He was 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes.
He returned to Fort Worth, TX after the war.
By 1895 John lived in Durant (Indian Territory), he moved into Fannin Co. TX in 1902. He then lived with different children for several years and in early 1920 he and Charlotte went into the Confederate Old Soldiers Home in Ardmore, OK. He died there in 1924 and is buried there with a Confederate Soldier's headstone. Charlotte lived at the home until her death in 1941 and is buried there also.
