Actor. Son of actor Osgood Perkins, he followed in his father's footsteps when he became a member of Actor's Equity at the age of 15. His film debut came in 1953 in a film called “The Actress”. In 1956 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in “Friendly Persuasion”, but his first major role came the following year when he portrayed baseball player Jimmy Piersall in “Fear Strikes Out”. In 1960 he was Jane Fonda's first leading man in “Tall Story”. Other prominent film roles include “The Matchmaker”, “On The Beach”, “Catch-22”, “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean”, “Murder On The Orient Express”, “Mahogany”, and “Crimes of Passion”. However, his name will always be synonymous with his most famous role, the sociopath ‘Norman Bates’ in Alfred Hitchcock's film classic “Psycho”, a role he would recreate in three sequels.
