Robert was the son of Devoy Porter and Beulah M. Porter of Enid OK and he entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on April 9 1969 in Oklahoma City OK. Arriving in Vietnam on October 15 1969 he was assigned for duty with Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During Operation IMPERIAL LAKE in the Central Que Son Mountains on Hill 845 in the Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province the Marines were engaged in heavy contact with the enemy while searching a NVA harbor site. The Platoon was pinned down from heavy automatic weapons fire, and to relieve some of the enemy pressure an air strike was requested, after several bombing runs the mission was accomplished. One of the casualties during the fire fight with the enemy was Cpl Porter; he was killed in action as a result of enemy gunshot wounds.
