Daughter of Matthew Davis Taft and Susan Stevens
Alice Antoinette Taft Newell was born in Ashtabula county, Ohio March 27, 1844 and departed this life July 1, 1929 at the ripe old age of 85 years 3 months and 4 days. At the age of 7 she moved with her parents in the state of Michigan where she lived until she became a young woman when she moved to Illinois. On February 18, 1867, seh was united in marriage to John Wyman Newell. To this union were born 6 chilren. One died in infancy, the only boy of the family passed away at the age of 11 years, the oldest daughter Mrs Clara Sanders, died in 1915 leaving two daughters who are now Mrs Grace Stephenson of Yale, and Mrs Frances Oliver of Oklahoma City. Mr Newell departed this life in 1902. Mrs Newell leaves 3 daughters, Mrs John Young, Braman; Mrs John Gayman, Chandler; and Miss Rose Newell of Bristow, all of whom were present when the end came. There are 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and a hot of friends who will sadly miss her. In 1891 at the opening of the Sac & Fox country to settlement Mr and Mrs Newell came to this county and were numbered among those who wrought and worked that a civilization such as we now enjoy might be a reality in a new an untried wilderness, and to time and to such worthy pioneers we owe a great debt of gratitude for their hardships were many and their pleasures few, and they even built better than they know. Almost 30 years ago they moved to Chandler and identified themselves with every movement for the betterment of the community and made a record good enough to lie by and safe enough to die by. While a mere chil Mrs Newell became converted and united with the church and has continued to grow in the faith and in the knowledge of her Lord. The last several years she has made her home with Mr and Mrs Gayman who will miss her more than anyone else. Interment was made in Oak Park cemetery beside those who have gone on before.
