| Birth: | Dec. 30, 1776 Charleston Charleston County South Carolina, USA | | Death: | May 24, 1846 Philadelphia Philadelphia County Pennsylvania, USA |  War of 1812 US Army Officer, US Congressman. Served in the War of 1812 first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 10th US Infantry, then as Colonel of the 18th US Infantry. In August 1814 he was appointed Inspector General of the US Army, and served in that office until the close of the war. Elected to represent South Carolina's 1st District in the House of Representatives when Joel Poinsett resigned. He served from 1825 to 1833. Declined the appointments to the offices of Secretary of War in Andrew Jackson's cabinet, and US Minister to England. His two sons fought in the Civil War on opposite sides. Older son Thomas Fenton Drayton became a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Younger son Percival Drayton rose to Rear-Admiral in the Union Navy.
