James E. Shaffer, 81, of Smithfield, Pa., passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Boise, Idaho.
He was born on April 6, 1926, in Brownsville, Pa., a son of the now late Nathan H., Shaffer and Gussie P. Fowler Shaffer. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a retired coal miner from Duquesne Light having belonged to the UMWA Dist 04, Local Union 6310.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy. He was also a member of VFW Post 7219 Fairchance.
Mr. Shaffer was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his time spent at Mann's Choice Area near Bedford, Pa.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Lucille Wilson Shaffer and two daughters, Karen Arndt and Sharon Brinkman both of Boise, Idaho; his brother-in-law, Evans Wilson of Smithfield, Pa.; grandchildren, William Brinkman and wife Cathy of Boise, Idaho, Brian , Elizabeth, Kaitlin, Alex Arndt all at home; 41 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, William Brinkman, and the following brothers and sisters, John, Clyde, Lloyd, Elmer, Cecil, and Guy Shaffer, Jesse Reese and Gertrude Kennison.
The family will receive friends in the JOHN F. BROWNFIELD FUNERAL HOME, Smithfield, Pa., today, September 7, 2007, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday until 11 a.m. the hour of service with the Rev. George W. McLaughlin officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Moriah Baptist Cemetery, Smithfield.
