John F. Meikrantz, a former resident of North Cedar street, died in Clarksboro, New Jersey, Thursday night from the effects of a stroke. Deceased was age 70 years and was born in Kur Hessen, Germany. When about 19 years of age he came to this country with his parents and resided here for the greater part of that time. He was a blacksmith by trade and for years conducted a shop on Holly street, retiring form active service about three years ago. For the past two years he has been making his home here and in Clarksboro. In February he came to this city and remained here until three weeks ago, when he returned to his former place. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was among the first volunteers from this city, being a member of the three months men. Later he enlisted in the Second New Jersey Calvary. He was past Post Commander of Post 20, G.A.R. Deceased is survived by these children: Mrs. Farnham and Miss Carrie, of New York; Mrs. Joseph Price, of Stroudsburg; William, of Clarksboro, N.J.; Herman, of Allentown; Conrad, John, Henry and Adam, of West Hazleton; Harry and Benjamin, of this city; Amanda and Edna, of New York, and Thomas, a member of the state constabulary in Reading. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Herman Sauers, of North Cedar street and 2 brothers, Henry, of this city, and Martin, in Germany. The remains will arrive here on Sunday on the 12:50 Pennsy Flier, and be taken to the Grace Reformed church, where services will be conducted, followed by interment in the Vine Street cemetery. Post 20 G.A.R. will attend the funeral in a body.
