Theatrical Director. Founder and Executive Director of the National Black Theater Festival. A theater lover since childhood, Hamlin's passion for the stage led him to found one of the most important venues in American theater: the National Black Theater Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The biennial event has showcased innumerable performers, playwrights, directors, and designers of color, and its participants have regularly included such luminaries as Denzel Washington, Maya Angelou, August Wilson, Oprah Winfrey, Sydney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and Cecily Tyson. Born and raised in the tobacco country of North Carolina, Larry was the second of four children born to Charles and Annie Hamlin. He attended Johnson and Wales College in Rhode Island, graduating in 1971 with a B.A. in Business Administration, but afterwards studied Theater at nearby Brown University, where he honed his acting and directing skills in student productions. When family matters necessitated his return to North Carolina in the late 1970's, he founded the first professional Black theater in the state, and continued to pursue his craft as an actor, director, playwright, and producer. Known for dressing in purple from head to toe and for coining the word "marvtastic" to describe his outlook on life, Hamlin envisioned an event which would promote communication among the often isolated Black performance groups and theater artists from across the United States and abroad, and succeeded with the founding of the National Black Theater Festival in 1989. The recipient of numerous awards for his work, he died at home after a long illness at the age of 58. Survivors include his wife, the former Sylvia Sprinkle, their son Larente, and two grandchildren. He was buried here in Piedmont Memorial Gardens following a funeral service at the Union Baptist Church. (bio by: Nikita Barlow)
