US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1960 to 1977, as a representative from North Carolina's 12th and 11th Congressional Districts. A graduate of the Asheville University School of Law, he served in the United States Navy during the Second World War. Prior to serving in Congress he served in the North Carolina State Legislature from 1947 to 1949, and from 1951 to 1953.
