Margaret Barnes Ashburn, 83, of the 31000 block of Pulaski Lane, Carrsville, was called to be with the Lord Sept. 16, 2007 in Courtland Healthcare Center. She was a native of Isle of Wight County and the daughter of the late George W. Barnes Sr. and Easter Maddrey Barnes. She was preceded on the journey to the Great Beyond by her husband, William Henry Ashburn and her brothers, Wilbert Maddrey and George W. Barnes Jr. Mrs. Ashburn worked for the J. D. Wright family for more than 35 years and retired in 1998. She was a faithful member of Pulaski Baptist Church where she served as the church clerk for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the usher board, missionary circle, pastor's aide society, and was superintendent of the Sunday school and the Church Bible school, and local Cub Master for Cub Scout pack 91 sponsored by the church. She was also a member of the Sharon Missionary Baptist Association and its Allied Bodies and the Sunday School Union. She was a founding member of Carrsville Community Day (a community-based annual celebration) and one of the first minority members of the Windsor Rescue Squad in Windsor, Va. She was a 4-H Club leader for several years, and a member of her community's homemakers' club. Margaret loved cooking, gardening, mechanics and helping others whenever she could. Those left to cherish her memory include her devoted aunt, Bertha Knight; a cousin, M. Elaine Boone; a niece and caregiver, Janice Hicks and her husband Roy, all of Carrsville, Va.; nephew, Calvin Maddrey Sr. and wife Pauline of Suffolk; one sister-in-law, Annie Mae Maddrey of Carrsville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pulaski Baptist Church, Carrsville, by Dr. Robert E. Rodgers. Interment will be held in Picott Cemetery, Carrsville. The family will receive family and friends at the home of Roy and Janice Hicks, 31454 Pulaski Lane, Carrsville. Crocker Funeral Horne Inc. is handling the arrangements.
