Don Jose Antonio Romeu
Birth: unknown
Death: Apr. 9, 1792

Governor of Spanish California. A native of Valencia, Spain and an officer in the Spanish army, Don Jose Romeu was a veteran of campaigns in Mexico. In 1790, he was appointed to serve as the 5th Governor of Spanish California. While on route to Monterey to assume his position he fell seriously ill and as a result, he would accomplish very little as governor after he arrived in October of 1791. Succumbing to his illness in April 1792, he was buried beneath the floor of the church at Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo.
