Son of Daniel Byers and Sarah Pague Goodman. Husband of Nancy.

Children of this marriage: Margaret Byers, Emma D. Byers, Malinda Byers, John A. Byers, Willis Byers, James F. Byers, Harry S. Byers, Annie C. Byers, and Stewart S. Byers.

In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Newville, Cumberland County. He stood 5 feet 7 inches tall, with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville in September 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 6 as 2nd lieutenant of Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant February 27, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.
