Civil War Union Army Officer. An 1855 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in the Army for two years before resigning in 1857. When the Civil War erupted, he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, a regiment that was led by Colonel Fletcher Webster, son of Daniel Webster. After Colonel Webster death at the August 1862 Battle of Second Bull Run, Major James L. Bates of the 33rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry (who had previously been a Captain in the 12th Massachusetts) was promoted to Colonel and was transferred to command the regiment over Colonel Bryant. Feeling slighted, he resigned on October 7, 1862. Offering his services to his native Pennsylvania, he was commissioned as Colonel and commander of the 18th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on December 24, 1862. He led the regiment in his operations with the Army of the Potomac, and briefly commanded a brigade in the spring of 1864. Stricken with dysentery, he resigned due to disability on December 29, 1864. After the war he became a noted Philadelphia, Pennsylvania geologist, and contributed research to the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
