Opera Singer. He was the first American born operatic baritone singer to gain an international reputation. In 1891, he made his operatic debut in London, England and was the leading Wagnerian baritone of the Metropolitan Opera Company, New York City, 1896 to 1903. Although he sang in four languages, he advocated English translation of foreign operas and supported native opera in English. After his death at age 64 in New York City, the Opera Society of America established the Bispham Memorial Medal Award for American composers of operas.
