Porter married Nancy Jane Gunn, the daughter of the cemetery's founders James and Ursula (Sweeney) Gunn on 12 March 1840 in Morgan County, IL. They were the parents of 10 children: George who married Martha Mitchell; John Isaac, married to Sarah Elizabeth Spencer; James Parish, married to Martha Hannah Spires; William Morgan and Mary Emmaline who both died as young adults and were not married; Malinda, second wife of Watson Grossman; Francis Wesley, married to Mary Elizabeth Million; Wesley Green, married first to Mary Camm and second to Loumyra Robb; Hannah Ursula, first wife of Augustus Seymour; and Julia Ann, married to Philip Fry Spencer. George, William, Mary, Wesley and Julia are all buried in this cemetery.
Porter was the youngest child of James and Hannah Mary (Self) Story, and emigrated from Tennessee to Morgan County with them before 1830. James died shortly after the family arrived, and Hannah sometime after 1850. They were buried in a nearby cemetery, Mt. Zion West, aka Story, but that cemetery no longer exists. It was bulldozed away shortly after World War II.
Porter was a farmer and was appointed Justice of the Peace by President Abraham Lincoln. He acquired substantial real estate holdings, and was essentially a wealthy man. When the Civil War began, he paid the bounty for someone else to serve in place of each of his five sons.
After his wife Nancy inherited the land where the cemetery lies from her father, they formally donated the ground to the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, which still holds the title.
