| Birth: | Dec. 10, 1741 Hampshire, England | | Death: | Sep. 3, 1815 Boston Suffolk County Massachusetts, USA | Minister. Considered the founder of American Universalism, Murray grew up in England and Ireland in a strict Calvinist home, converted to Methodism as a teenager, and not many years later discovered James Relly's Universalist teachings. Murray's Universalist beliefs led to his being excommunicated from the Methodist Church. Moving to America in 1770, he traveled the Northeast, preaching Universalism. After several years of itinerant ministry, Murray settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he established a Universalist congregation. He moved to Boston in 1793 and remained there until his death. (bio by: NatalieMaynor)
