Born in Chicago, Illinois, his father was a concert violinist and he himself was an accomplished cellist. He began his career in vaudeville at the age of 14 and at one time worked in a Chicago speakeasy owned by Al Capone. He moved to California where he became a writer for the likes of Fanny Brice, Jimmy Durante and Will Rogers.
