Clair Rinda "Clairinda' Gouldy married James Sluss 27 Jan 1853 in Tazewell Co VA.
Clair Rinda & James Sluss had 13 children. Two off the daughters, Corrilda Alice Sluss & Margaret Rebecca Sluss were my great grandmothers.
Corrilda Alice married Rufus Jackson Shrader , 1862-1954
Margaret Rebecca married Hugh Edward Tabor, 1862-1914

The name Gouldy was Americanized to Goldey and Golden by some descendants.

mtDNA
September, 2002, Karen Eagle Moman was given, as a birhtday gift, for her September 14th birthday, by her family members, a $250.00 prepaid fee which provided a chance to have our family's mtDNA read by the Oxford University in England. This test would determine, through our Mother's line, our mt DNA.

Prof. Bryan Sykes, MA PhD DSc, Professor of Human Genetics, is the head of the department conducting this reserach.

"The female genealogy has created an evolutionary framework going back 150,000 years, and reveals that almost everyone in Europe, or whose maternal roots are in Europe, is descended from one of only seven women. * Each of them founded a maternal clan whose descendants make up well over 95% of modern Europeans."
* Prof. Bryan Sykes and his team have named the seven women as "The Seven Daughters of Eve;"

HELENA. (Greek for light)............20,000 years
JASMINE. (Persian for flower).....10,000 years
KATRINE (Greek for pure) .........15,000 years
TARA. (Gaelic for rocky hill)........17,000 years
URSULA. (Latin for she-bear)......45,000 years
VELDA. (Scandinavian for ruler)..17,000 years
XENIA (Greek for hospital)............25,000 years

On 18 October, 2002, Karen received the results that declared that, through our mother. Hettie Marie (Shrader) Eagle, we are of the URSULA CLAN.

URSLA
Ursula lived about 45, 000 years ago in what in now northern Greece. She was among the first arrivals of a new, modern human to set foot in Europe. She was slender and graceful, in marked contrast to the thickset Neanderthals with whom she and her clan shared the land for another 20,000 years. Her kind brought with them a new and more sophisticated type of stone tool with which to hunt and butcher the abundant game, animals that soon appeared on the walls of limestone caves as the first expression of human art. They spread right across Europe, west across France and north as far as the British Isles.

As the climate deteriorated 25,000 years ago, the clan began its long migration south; eventually reaching Spain and founding what became a refuge for all humans during the coldest millennia of the last Ice Age. As the climate warmed, the scattered clan led the march back to the North to reclaim the once frozen lands. They reached the British Isles and left an indelible record in the limestone caves of Cheddar Gorge. In 1998 DNA was recovered from the famous skeleton known as Cheddar Man and our analysis showed that it belonged to the clan of Ursula. In a dramatic demonstration of genetic continuity, we found that a teacher at the local school, only a few hundred yards from the cave entrance, was clearly a member of the same clan.

HOW mtDNA WORKS:
[An e-mail received from Janice Marie Eagle to Karen Louise (Eagle) Moman October 19, 2002]

Dearest Karen-Bear,
"Birds and Bees" of DNA: Billions of years ago (literally) a bacterium called mitochonria entered the cell of living organisms. It provides the service of energy so the cell nucleus is better able to do its work; the cell and it live in symbiosis, each doing something for the other. The cell gives its resident a comfy place to live. In evolution, skip up the line billions of years to mammals: when conception occurs, the female egg---the largest single cell the body ever produces---has lots of the mt (abbrev. for mitochondria),all living outside the nucleus but within the membrane. The sperm, cute little tiny thing, has only a few mt in its tail---enough energy to get it to the egg. When the sperm is absorbed, only its head, the nucleus with all the other DNA, is retained. The tail with its mt is used up by then. So none of the mtDNA from the male survives the act of fertilization. Now, every cell in every body on earth carries this very simplified DNA from the mother; it has only around 16,000 bits of genetic information, compared to billions in the center or NUCLEUS of every cell. Looking at our mtDNA, geneticists can calculate who's related to whom by reading the bands of information which show up under the microscope---AND they can tell approximately how many years or centuries have passed since that mt separated from its ancestors. They tell by how many mutations have occurred. The nucleus of every cell contains the really important genes which combined from both mother and father to create the person. But what's in your cheek swab is only patterns from Hettie's mother's mother's mother's mother's.....etc...back 2250 GENERATIONS to 45,000 years ago! (That's calculated by dividing a generation of 20 years into 45,000 years. Modern generations are counted as 25 years, but across the story of humankind, they use only 20 years.) Actually, the geneticists like Prof. Sykes will be able to take us back 150,000 to our African "Eve" before too long. There was not just one woman then, but many whose line did not survive. Eve had lots of company at the time, but their children's children died out somewhere over the next many thousands of years. Hope that's not too mind-boggling. But it is an

I can't tell you how blessed I feel that you've done that. Thank you again and again; it is so precious to have human names to make this all come alive! Happy Sunday! Janny-Bear
