Milton man injured in industrial explosion dies

A Milton man who was injured in an industrial explosion last year died Wednesday at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison.

Henry "Dobber" Thompson Jr., 49, was a foreman and welder for Pittsburgh Tank & Tower of Henderson, Ky., on a construction project in Hattiesburg, Miss., at the time of the accident in 2006. The force of the explosion pushed Thompson 40 feet into the air, and he landed head-first on the ground.

After the explosion, Thompson spent three months in a hospital in Mississippi and was transferred to a Kentucky hospital where he received physical therapy.

He was released from the hospital later last year. He lost sight in his left eye and sustained a serious head injury from the accident.

Thompson is survived by his wife, Teresa Kay Kinman Thompson; his daughters, Lacey Driggers of St. Stephans, S.C., and Katrina Thompson of Milton; his sisters, Peggy Melton of Jefferson, S.C., Margaret Simpson of Jefferson, S.C., and Glenn Johnson of Lancaster, S.C.; his brother, Dennis C. Thompson of Antioch, S.C., and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Thompson Sr. and Gladys Faile Thompson; his sister, Phyllis Bach; and his brother, Ira Thompson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will be in Moffett Cemetery in Milton.

Friends may call the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

The Rev. Aaron Snelling will preside.
