Mary Alice (Spensley) Weir, 94, of 3129 Hillcrest Road,
died Thursday, Jun 8, 2006, at the Finely Hospital, Dubuque.
Private funeral services will be held at Siegert- Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grndview Ave. Burial will be in Rockdale Cemetery.
She was born on Aug 12, 1911, t 430 Alpine St., Dubuque, daughter of Harker B. and Elsie (Tileston) Spensley. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1928, attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, for two years, and received a bacholor's degree in psychology from the University of Chicago in 1932.
She married John Marshall Weir Jr., of Decatur, Ill., on Dec 15 1934. He received his doctor of medecine degrees from the University of Chicago in 1937, and was associated for more than 30 years with the Rockefeller Foundation. As his work was in the field of international health, the Weir family lived for a number of years in South America and in Egypt and traveled extessively in Europe.
They returned to the United States in 1952, and sttled in Stamford, Conn. There she served as a substitute teacher in the public schools and as a volunteer teacher of English-as-a-second- language. She also worked as a legal secretary in the patent-law firm until age 84, and studied painting at Silvermine Guild of Artists.
Widowed in 1992, she returned to Dubuque 1n 1997, and made her home at Luther Manor Apartments.
She traveled extensively throught Europe and lived 2 years in Bogata, Columbia, 2 years in Kingston, Jamaica and 5 1/2 years in Cairo, Egypt.
She was a member of one of Dubuque's oldest families, her great-grandfather having moved to Dubuque ib 1832, before Iowa became a state. At one time she and her sister owned the Town Clock Tower/Building, and the former Spensley (now Five Flags) Theater.
Surviving are two sons, Col. John M. Weir, San Antonio, Texas and Michael W. Weir of Scarsdale New York; a daughter Adrianna W Weir, of Sacremento, Calif; three grandsons, John M Weir of Tampa, Fla.,and James M Weir and William H Weir both of Scarsdale; and a granddaughter, Sandra Victoria Weir, of San Antonio.
She was the last of four Spensley siblings,Anne Gallogly, and Gorgette Hardie, of Dubuque, and Harker Spensley, of Denver.
Memorials may be given to Luther Manor, Hospice of Dubuque and the Salvation Army.
