Professional football player. After graduating from Medford High School in Medford, Oklahoma, George Randall Gibson went to the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota he was a teammate and roommate of Bronko Nagurski. In 1928, famed Knute Rockne and Pop Warner named him to their prestigious All-American team. In 1930, after his graduation, Gibson was player-coach of two NFL franchises, the Minneapolis Red Jackets and the Frankford Yellow Jackets, located in Philadelphia. He has the distinction of being the only person in NFL history to have been a player-coach on two teams in a single year that both went bankrupt. Although the teams he played for and coached had shaky histories, he received All Pro recognition. He played a total of 14 games in his year in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers tried to sign him to play the next year, but he returned to Minnesota where he got a Ph.D. in geology. He taught geology and coached football at Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., before moving to Midland, Texas, where he became a geological consultant to oil companies. Gibson received many honors and awards in his field, among them induction into the Petroleum Museum Hall of Fame in 2001. (bio by: Mel Bashore)
