Philip Gordon Wylie
Birth: May 12, 1902
Beverly
Essex County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Oct. 25, 1971
Miami
Miami-Dade County
Florida, USA

Writer. Born in North Beverly, Mass, his family moved to New Jersey where he later attended Princeton University (Class of 1924). He wrote many books and articles criticizing society and its values. His greatest contributions were in the Science Fiction genre. He co-authored the book, "When Worlds Collide" (1932), with Edwin Balmer, which was made into the movie by the same name in 1951 starring Richard Derr and Barbara Rush. He also wrote the novel, "The Savage Gentleman" (1932), which was the inspiration for the pulp novel book character Doc Savage. He is best remembered for the 1930 novel "Gladiator," which told of Hugo Danner, who was granted fantastic powers by his father and how he coped with them in a world of normal humans. This tale was a direct inspiration for the creation of Superman in 1939 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. He was married to Frederica Ballard (1910-1981). (bio by: Rick Jones)
