While walking home from work on a dark Brooklyn Street on the night of March 8, 1952 Arnold Schuster was shot to death by a lone gunman. The reason for Schuster's murder went back to the month before. On Feb.16,1952 Schuster spotted escaped convict Willie (The Actor) Sutton on a New York City subway and notified the police. Sutton was quickly arrested. Schuster became a hero and was interviewed by the local TV news stations. One of these broadcasts was watched by Mafia boss Albert Anastasia who screamed to his men "I can't stand squealers, hit that guy !". Sutton had no Organized Crime connections and the crime went unsolved until 1963. In 1963 Joseph Valachi became the first Mafia member to turn informant and testified before a Senate Investigating Committee looking into Mafia activities in America. During his testimony Valachi revealed that Anastasia ordered Schuster's murder for no other reason then he believed Schuster "squealed" on Sutton. Valachi also testified that the man who murdered Schuster was also killed on Anastasia's orders to keep him from talking.
