Capt. Scott N. Shimp of Bayard, Nebraska attended school at Bayard, where he graduated with the Class of 1998 as the Salutatorian of his class. While in high school Scott was involved in football, wrestling, 21st Century Singers, Choir and the National Honor Society. He was a member of the Boy Scouts Troop 22 in Bayard and received his Eagle Scout Award November 8, 1996. He was also a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Scott graduated from West Point, June 1, 2002 with a degree in electrical engineering. His Class was the bi-centennial class to graduate from West Point and their diplomas were presented by President George W. Bush. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Aviation. Following his completion of the Initial Rotary Wing Course, Aviation Basic Course, and UH-60L Qualification Course in 2003. He was a Blackhawk pilot, and the company commander. He joined the Army in June 2002 and arrived at Fort Campbell in May 2007. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Aviator badge and the parachutist's badge. He was one of three men who died when an Army helicopter went down in Alabama during training. Scott was a U. S. Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot, who loved to fly and was honored to be able to serve his country. He loved to snowboard, jet-ski, ride his motorcycle, camping and hiking and spending time at the lake with his family and friends. Scott's family and friends meant the world to him. He was always there for everyone including his military family. He especially loved spending time with his big brother He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. He was 28.
