Nicknamed ‘Little Chocolate' he was the first black boxer to win a world title and is considered by many to be the greatest fighter of the 19th century. At age 20, he fought his first championship fight becoming the bantamweight champ in 1890. He was featherweight champion (1891-1900) and fought in a total of 23world championship bouts. Over the course of his career he fought in over 1,000 fights, a record unparalleled in the history of sports. He is also credited with inventing shadow boxing. He died at age 38 in New York City.
