Buried with his brother, Alexander. Murdered by their mother Susan Smith. After believing the man she was involved with did not want a relationship with a woman with children therefore not wanting a relationship with her she intended to drive her car down the ramp at John D. Long Lake taking her and her children's lives at once. At the last second, Susan exited the car and allowed it to roll down the ramp with her two sons still strapped in their car seats. Later that evening she became hysterical, went to the Union county police and told them that a black man had carjacked her at knifepoint instructing her to get out of the car taking Michael and Alex with him. A huge nationwide search ensued and wanted posters with the children's and alleged kidnapper's photos were distributed. Several days later, after being repeatedly questioned about the discrepancies in her story by Union's sheriff, she finally confessed and told police that she had allowed her car to roll into John D. Long lake with the children still inside. Divers searched the waters and recovered Susan's Mazda Protege with the bodies of Michael and Alex still strapped in their car seats - Michael, the oldest, holding his little brother's hand. Susan is now serving a life sentence in prison.
