A member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada (1844-1867) he was one of the leading delegates seeking a union of the British North American colonies -- one of the Fathers of Confederation. Knighted and unanimously chosen to be the first prime minister of Canada on July 1, 1867. Served as MP in the House of Commons (1967-1891) and died in office as PM. The pragmatic but visionary Macdonald, "Sir John A.," was responsible for the coast-to-coast Canadian Pacific Railway that made Canada a continental country; the establishment of the national parks system and the North West Mounted Police (precursor of today's RCMP, or Mounties).
