Robert had an A.B. degree from Roanoke College, Virginia. He then earned his Bachelor of Law degree from George Washington Law School, placing second in the large class of 140. Robert had a clerkship in the Census Department in Washington, DC while attending school. He moved to Cleveland, OH from Washington, DC in 1903 and formed the law firm Bemis, Zigelman and Calfee with two other men. By 1908, he was the sole proprietor of one of the largest law firms in Ohio. He returned to Washington to counsel the inventor of the Lewis Machine Gun which was manufactured in Europe and used by the Allies in World War I. He went to Czechoslovakia to help draw up a new constitution. His law firm expanded greatly and won many accolades. His home in Cleveland was at 2755 Berkshire Road, and in 1937, he lived in Coconut Grove, Florida.
