James was born in Marmet, West Virginia. He was the oldest son of James Richard Smith and Elizabeth VanBibber Reynolds. James married Maggie Gayer in Hinton, West Virginia on April 18, 1895. They lived most of their life in Huntington, West Virginia. James was a conductor for the C & O RR for 50 years. Early in his working life, he took a leave from the railroad for a time to be the mayor of Hinton, West Virginia. In 1910, he and his family lived at 1710-8th Ave., in Huntington. The 1910 Huntington City Directory says his middle initial is "L" Kanawha County Birth Records say that his middle initial is "F". His death record says his middle name was Farlin. He died on December 26, 1944 at the C & O Hospital in Huntington, where he had been living at 714-11th Ave. He is buried in Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington.
