Lucy Ludwell was baptized November 8, 1752 and was the third surviving daughter of Philip Ludwell III and his wife, Frances (Grymes) Ludwell. A native of Virginia, she lived much of her life in London, where she married the Anglo-Greek linguist John Paradise (1743–1795), a Fellow of the Royal Society and friend of the English writer, Samuel Johnson. She moved to London with her father and two sisters in 1760 and did not return permanently to Virginia until 1805, with the exception of a visit made to Virginia with her husband in 1787. She resided in her father's townhouse on Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg. The house is now known as the Ludwell-Paradise House.

The burial of Lucy Ludwell Paradise in this cemetery is based on the work of the Associates of Colonel Philip Ludwell III.
