Alexander Lukich Ptushko
Birth: Apr. 19, 1900
Death: Mar. 6, 1973

Film Director. Born in Lugansk, Russian Empire, he was an animation and fantasy film director known as the Soviet Walt Disney. He began his film career in 1927, at the Moscow Mosfilm Studio as a puppet maker for animated films and became a director of his own series of silent puppet films. After going into live action films, he was awarded a prize at the International Cinema Festival in Milan for his film “The New Gulliver” (1935). For the next three decades he made fantasy, animations and horror films, plus was prominent in the use of color cinematography and special effects. Some of his many credits included “The Golden Key” (1938), “The Stone Flower” (1946), “"Silver Lion" (1953), “Fuse #3 (1962) and “The Day the Earth Froze” (1964). He died at age 72 in Moscow, Soviet Union. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
